But the drumbeat seems to be starting again. A couple of weeks ago the following landed in my inbox:
Sudan: On the Path to Peace or Crisis?"US policy options"! If that phrase doesn't send a chill down your spine, you must be Dexter.A panel discussion featuring:
John Prendergast, Co-Founder, The Enough Project
Dr. J. Peter Pham, Senior Fellow and Africa Project Director, National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and Vice President, Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA)
Ambassador Herman J. Cohen, Former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs
Ambassador David Shinn (moderator), Former Ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina FasoDespite some signs of progress in Sudan, other indications suggest a growing potential for conflict surrounding the elections scheduled for early April. Census and registration issues have not been resolved, raising serious doubts about the legitimacy of the election results...
The panel will address the complicated dynamics at play in Sudan, discuss U.S. policy options, and analyze regional implications as well as the influence of foreign actors, such as Egypt, China, and Iran.
About FPI
FPI seeks to promote an active U.S. foreign policy committed to robust support for democratic allies, human rights, a strong American military equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century, and strengthening America's global economic competitiveness. The organization is led by Executive Director Jamie Fly. FPI was founded in 2009 by Robert Kagan, William Kristol, and Dan Senor. Visit our website at www.foreignpolicyi.org for more information.
Today the useful idiots at Alternet chimed in on cue, following the Kaganite lead. Here's the left shoe dropping, or rather, the left boot hitting the ground:
From: AlterNetIt seems pretty obvious to me that this "Save Darfur" campaign has Israel Lobby thumbprints all over it. Has anybody ever really researched this?

Reply-To: alternet@mail.democracyinaction.orgDear Reader, In the lead up to this week's elections in Sudan, current President Omar al-Bashir has used government troops to attack journalists and activists. Join the Save Darfur Coalition in urging President Obama to not recognize the results of this sham election. [ http://action.savedarfur.org/campaign/sudanelections_an ]

It's kind of sad, really. Darfur is uber-classic propaganda (which is not to suggest people aren't butchering each other with great glee and aplomb, there).
The Chinese got an oil concession from the degraded Sudanese state, which state desperately needed the dough after it was drawn to a standstill in a ten year religious-civil war with UK-US backed rebels.
Then, new rebels based in Tchad, using (surprise, surprise) US-EU backing, kicked up a fight right in the territory where Khartoum granted concessions to Beijing.
Since presenting it that way smacks of expensive interventionism, and since Khartoum made the "mistake" of hiring some horse-riding brigands to put down the rebellion, we get instead this:
"Terrible Musli Arabs butcher and rape poor victimish tribal Blacks."
Which, of course, is nothing if not approaching zero, with one being the aggregate facts of the case, if not the truth.
Since, and this is fairly basic data, nearly all of the participants are (a) black, (b) Muslim and (c) tribal. If you look at any given group photo of a Janjaweed rough rider, you're likely going to be looking at a (gasp!) very black man.
Because - and again, with just a wee bit of the browser capacity employed - it's rather easy to come across some simple truths:
In the Sudanese west, especially along the border with Tchad, "African" and "Arab" are economic/social tribal categories. Nearly every member of each tribe is black skinned and Allah worshipping, but "Arabs" are pastoralists with closer ties to Khartoum, and a tendency to use Arabic in exchange, while "Africans" are people tending more towards agriculture, especially around Lake Tchad, who speak

But that just isn't sexy, or easy to sell to stupidos in the UK and the US, where official policy encourages both distrust of Muslim Arabs and wafer thin justificatory guilt over bad things done to black people by the forebears of the white people still running things today...

I don't think the U.S. imperium needs any help at all from the Israeli imperium to make their moves to establish a beachhead off the horn of Africa. It is, of course, useful to have a bunch of Hollywood shills like George Clooney to front for the agression, since the spectacle has (for the time being) convinced people that public leadership and celebrity advocacy are the same thing.

The Save Darfur campaign has been brought to you by the makers of the Save Iraq and Save Iran campaigns. Please give generously to save the innocent blacks from the Muslim A-rab hordes. Only American military intervention can stop the bloodshed. Act now before it's too late!

Dating back about 30 years is a little 3-line joke my friends and I used to share
in NYC it's who you owe
in DC it's who you know
in LA it's who you blow
Actors who stump for Israel are very likely doing so because the studios who would employ them have Israelophile execs. The Israelophiles I know in America right now are working from a perspective of powerful paranoia; they seem to think that Hitler has risen from his grave and is preparing to round up Jews and put them in camps, and it doesn't seem to matter that there is little evidence of such games afoot, the paranoia is positive and plentiful. I don't know any Hollywood people but if the studios that employ actors are run at least partly by such Israelophiles, pretending to be a Zionist would basically be a "career move" for an actor who seeks to make more movies.
Just a guess, but I don't think it's too far-fetched.

Pretending to be a Zionist seems to be a necessary career move for most US politicians as well.
How are we going to beat back the anti-Israel divestment resolution at Berkeley?" said Jonathan Kessler, leadership development director for AIPAC, at a recent conference of the lobbying group. "We're going to make sure that pro-Israel students take over the student government and reverse the vote. This is how AIPAC operates in our nation's capitol. This is how AIPAC must operate on our nation's campuses.
