Even if it is only rubbing-in to the revelers what losers they are, the domestic angle makes me queasy. It should be a reminder that, if the 'conomy wuz goin' great, support for the rest of the empire would be that much higher, or that the "radical middle" staunchly support anything as long as it means that they might not lose their healthcare along with their jobs. Implement a full-on big L social program and they'd be feeding you soylent green.

More so than the libs who are high-fiving one another about OBL's termination, I get a kick out of the left-libs who "tsk, tsk" the libs for succumbing to the "U!S!A! U!S!A!" buffoonery. Their remonstrations invariably go something like, "Of course, I don't mourn Osama's passing, but these celebrations are shameful." What amuses me is not their disapproval of the jingoism. The jingoism is idiotic. Nor is it their "realization" that standard-issue liberals are imperialist war-mongers. (Although it is a bit amusing that just now they are recognizing this... uh, hello?)

What amuses me is their qualifying "I don't mourn Osama's passing..." Well, I don't mourn his passing, but I don't not mourn it either. And I certainly don't think the veracity (or not) of my claims regarding US imperialism (or whatever) have anything to do with my making a McCarthyist admission about the evil nature of Islamist terror. Anarchists talk about the "cop in your brain." These folks have a "Hitchens in their brain."

Then again, I may have to take that back. The standard-issue libs are giving the left-libs a run for their money. I went to the Facebook page of an old college pal who is a Grade-A certified Obama-ite. His page is mobbed by Obama-ites. How do they react to Dick Cheney congratulating Obama for getting his man? "I never thought I'd live to see this." Um, I don't think further comment is required...

Hell, if US special forces knocked off OBL on Bush's watch, the libs would claim that the squad leader, and his commander, were life-long Democrats. And the left-libs would whisper in hushed tones, "I don't mourn OBL's passing, but these guys are a little too prideful about it..."

When this news first came across my Twitter feed, my first thought was oh, Christ, is Bin Laden dead again? ...as in the past decade I'd heard Bin Laden's death reported more times than I'd had hot dinners.*

When it turned out it was true, my next immediate thought was oh, shit; I was hoping maybe he could help me find a goddamn' job! The doorknobs in charge here now sure don't seem to have a clue in hell...

What with all the All Bin Laden, All The Time on the news right now, I'm actually longing for the days of round-the-clock saturation Royal Wedding coverage.

Any bets on how soon this will be flushed from the news cycle? I'm thinking Friday, on the outside; it'll probably be that long before people sober up and remember that they're still unemployed, their houses are about to be foreclosed on, and they're about to lose their Medicare and Social Security. Remember how quickly everybody came down from the We Captured Saddam Hussein rush?

Actually, as I'm an editorial cartoonist, I have to pay close attention to the media and the news cycle. I got the idea for this one as soon as I saw the news come across my Twitter feed, and had to have it finished and posted while the news was still "hot"; it was what I call a "Great Caesar's Ghost" Moment. I had this one roughed, final drawing done, scanning/production finished and the cartoon posted to the blog within 24 hours; I'm still paying for it with with sleep deprivation.

The piece I did on the Anonymous leaks of the trove of incriminating Bank Of America emails was done in Great Caesar's Ghost Mode as well. I had that one drawn, prepped and posted within 12 hours of getting the news that the leaking was underway:
