Roll Call: Pelosi comes out for Murtha in Majority Leader's race.
Pelosi's letter to Murtha

11/12/2006

Dear Jack,

Thank you for your letter requesting my support for your candidacy for Majority Leader in the 110th Congress.

...Your strong voice for national security, the war on terror and Iraq provides genuine leadership for our party, and I count on you to continue to lead on these vital issues. For this and for all you have done for Democrats in the past and especially this last year, I am pleased to support your candidacy for Majority Leader for the 110th Congress. As we move forward and work together on the urgent questions of Iraq, the war on terrorism, strengthening our military to meet 21st century challenges, improving our national security.... your presence in the leadership of our party would add a knowledgeable and respected voice to our Democratic team.

A tip of the hat to JSP, who predicted this, and to Jonathan Lundell, who noted this development in a comment here.

For the moment at least, the generals seems to have stolen a march on the Lobby. Oh to have been a fly on the wall.

If only that meant drafting Kossacks!

Apart from momentary sense on Iraq Murtha is a Cold Warrior of yore, for a period a Gny. Sgt. Hartman and ultimately a Col. Kilgore. Letting him head the new majority will be a sign the Security Dems are riding high, eyeing defense trillions to be outlayed in the name of post-Iraq renewal and with an eye to sopping up the unemployed for those looming "21st century challenges," i.e., resource-extraction from nations without HDTV.

Then again, there's a housing-led recession on the near horizon. Things looked grim recently in a Twin Cities suburban Best Buy, where one after another unoccupied crewcut young worker set upon us with a kind of martial formality (taking cues, perhaps, from a bit of in-house propaganda that ran on a screen depicting U.S. Marines marching about the store and hauling off toys-for-tots in a Humvee; excess inventory? Send a Marine!).

Maybe by early 2008 a few Kossacks will find themselves "volunteering" for service, if not with the gusto of a Murtha then at least with the Panglossian pep of a Moulitsas.

The Kilgore link asserts that Hoyer will win despite Pelosi's endorsement of Murtha, but I'm inclined to take that as DLC spin.

Note also that comments with three or more links may be held for "moderation" -- a strange term to apply to the ghost in this blog's machine. Seems to be a hard-coded limitation of the blog software, unfortunately.
