sent me this e-mail note:
JS --The Saddam topple was the neocons' 9/11.
All these idiots running around frantic about what's next, what's next -- hey, has there been anything here since the towers toppled? There won't be anything out of the neocons either.
Well, that may be a little too hasty. We may be overdue for another 9/11, but I'm sure we'll have to wait till we elect a Democrat to the Oval Office before topple talk can reignite at the neocon Berchtesgaden.
As long as we have Cheney in there, newly sober and sore and gut-popped, mumbling sotto-voce "Let's take it step by step this time" -- the world's probably temporarily safe from the further spread of democracy.

Semour Hersh's new article in the N'Yorker seems to say the generals and realists are winning the tug of war with the neocons on Iran. At least they have stopped talk of using nuclear warheads, and are making the case they don't have good enough intelligence to know where to bomb. So maybe "Mr Y" is right.
Maybe the October surprise wont be bombing Iran, but signing a deal with Maliki.
On the other hand, if you believe our real goal in Iraq was to drive oil prices up (hurting our competitors) and create chaos in the ME (weakening states Israel feels threatened by) then there may still be horrors to come.
The last time I heard him, Scott Ritter thought realistic considerations had no weight with neocon planning.

There doesn't appear to be any ideological basis outside of a desire for power to the Bushists. In fact, there's little that couldn't be attributed to anger, constipation, self-importance and greed. The neocon intellectuals themselves are all careerist lickspittles. They whipped up some mystical foreign policy mumbo jumbo of warmed over White Man's Burden and a social organization model based on "just in time" manufacturing. Which suits the Bushists quite well.
A group like that should be a pushover for their institutional opposition.
