A characteristically contorted and peculiar piece in the Wall Street Journal contains some wonderfully hallucinatory Paul Revere stuff about the imminent Left takeover of the Democratic Party. My favorite line:
If [the Democrats] recapture either the House or the Senate this fall, a legislative drive to withdraw from Iraq cannot be ruled out. With people like Pelosi, Reid, Emanuel, Schumer, and St. Hill dominating the Democratic Party, I really don't think the elephants have much to fear from the tiny mouse of the Democratic antiwar contingent.
Then there's that Unmentionable Lobby... But hush, the walls have ears.

i liked this snapper at the end
"The great mistake that leading Democrats and anti-Communist liberals made during Vietnam was not speaking up against a left that was demanding retreat and sneering at our war heroes. Will any Democrat speak up now? "

In which decade are the editors at the Wall Street Journal living? Enquiring minds...

No decade that ever was or will be.

The older editors are lost in sixties nostalgia, yearning for a time when the struggle between good and evil was clearcut, and they wore crew cuts. The youngers ones are lost in eighties nostalgia, the result of completely misunderstanding that Gordon Gecko was the bad guy. In the eighties, the older ones were nostalgic for the fifties, a time when et cetera and so forth. in the twenties, the younger ones will be nostalgic for the oughts, the result of completely misunderstanding and so on.
What neither group can ever acknowledge is that letting zombies eat your brain, while a good career move, does expose you to a certain amount of ridicule.

According to the Telegraph UK, the Republicans are ordering a "decades-worth" of arms from the Russians for the Kharzai regime just in case the Democrats/Hillary take the White House and Congress in 2008. The article states that the Republicans fear St. Hill and the gang will abandon Afghanistan once in power. It's obvious to me now that they've gone mad with power...

My take, for what it's worth, on Tim D's comment --
Politically motivated excuse:
Real reason: Put more bluntly, the order is a bribe to get the Russkis in line on the Iran crusade.Posted by MJS | May 23, 2006 10:18 PM
