And you guys said Clinton was a bad guy!!!My guess is that they make a much better margin on the water. Since it's a captive market they can collude. No but really...the major corporations didn't even really fight it. What gives?
Sugary drinks banned from sale in schools
Associated Press in New York
Thursday May 4, 2006Guardian
Tens of millions of children will no longer be able to buy non-diet soft drinks in US state schools under an agreement announced yesterday between major distributors and anti-obesity campaigners. The distributors, working with a joint initiative of the William J Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association, also have agreed to sell only water, juice and low-fat milks to primary and middle schools, said Jay Carson, a spokesman for former President Bill Clinton.
Cadbury Schweppes, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and the American Beverage Association have signed up for the deal.

I'd rather my kids drank sugar water than the artificially sweetened crap. There's some real talent in taking a poor situation and making it worse. Mommy Squirrel does it again!

Of course, corn-syrup filled "juice products" are both profitable and not all that healthy for the future insuline consumers, so...

Brian beat me to it. We must now bow down in humble gratitude before the Soft Drink dinks because they will be selling equally harmful products with an even higher profit margin than they had before.
A perfect coda to the reign of Clinton I, if you think about it. Sums up the whole thing nicely. Vote Democrat: The More Efficient Poison. :p

Actually I just remembered that a while back my boss was telling me about how he was watching Clinton address the National Association of State Governors on C-Span and was amazed at how Clinton manages to bring people together on serious issues that need bipartisan attention and action (he's a Clinton fan, but I don't hold that against him).
Now that you all mention it, I suppose Clinton is probably getting major kickbacks from these corporations which have simply tailored their message and PR campaign to public concerns (while not really changing their product).
By the way, the whole issue of bottled water certainly rubs me the wrong way. Someone wrote an excellent article on CounterPunch a while back ago which sagaciously identified bottled water as a right-wing cultural symbol...

Yeah, I remember that article, Tim D. It was a good one. Also, bottled water tastes like crap. Eau de plastic. Or is it plastique...

No one has managed to acknowledge JSP's status as a sugary drink. It's a shame, because he speaks nothing less than the truth. I am not at liberty to divulge my sources on this, but it is a fact that he is like unto expertly sweetened ice coffee on a hot summer day.

Here's some potential blog fodder, by the way. I was especially pleased to see Evan Bayh in there.
